Is your little one feeling the need for speed? Then Lil 500 Go Kart Rides along U.S. Highway 17-92 in Maitland is the place to be — where kids as young as 5 can get behind the wheel and zip and zoom around the racetrack.
We were super-excited to attend a birthday party at Lil 500 recently. The birthday boy’s dad passed out ride tickets, which can also be purchased at $10 for 30 rides, $100 for 35 rides for $100, or $125 rides for 50 rides. A single ride is $4.
Our kiddos were all around 6 years old, so they headed over to the Family Track, where they lined up, handed in their tickets and sprinted to their favorite color car, hopped in and took off. They didn’t even have to push the gas! The junior go-carts only have a brake. Kids younger than 5 can steer a two-seated car while Mom and Dad handle all the pedals. (Or you can take the wheel should your kid prove to be a bad driver.) Kids 8 and up can drive on the hilly “off-road” Moto Track, and kids 10 and up can test their skills on the fast-drifting Fastrac.
Each pack of kids made about four laps, with a ride lasting about seven minutes.
The birthday party was set up in a fenced in area with shaded picnic tables. Parents could hang here — or sit in the “grandstand” to watch the action.
Lil 500 was built in 1968 and has been owned and operated by the same family ever since. I think that’s pretty cool, and you can tell that they take great pride in keeping everyone happy.
IF YOU GO: Decide beforehand how much you want to spend. It’s easy to get suckered by those smiles to shell out even more dough. Sunscreen is also a good idea. Feel free to bring snacks and drinks. Even if you don’t rent a picnic area, parking is close enough to access a cooler easily. Address: 150 Atlantic Drive, Maitland. Phone: 407-831-2045
