Looking for the perfect spot for a too hot or too rainy Central Florida day? Make your way to All Fired Up in Winter Park, an adorably quirky paint-your-own pottery studio that folks of all ages will love.
When you arrive, you pick the piece you want to paint from the shelves on the wall. Pieces start at $6 and go all the way up past $100. There are decorative figurines as well as functional pieces like bowls and plates. (My kids picked a cereal bowl and flip-flop box.) The pieces kids will gravitate to run between $10 and $30. A classic piggy bank is $35. Prices are marked clearly on the bottom of each piece and include your studio time, paints and firing. Translation: No confusing bill at the end that makes your scratch your head.
Picked the perfect piece? Now pick the perfect painting spot, which is easy at All Fired Up thanks to two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to flood the studio. Then pick your paints from the rainbow assortment on the wall, and get started.
Plan on spending at least an hour at the studio with little kids; you’ll likely end up helping them cover the white spots on their pottery. (Personally, I opt out of painting my own piece because I’ll know I’ll be helping my 6-year-olds with their work.) Coming with older kids, tweens or a perfectionist? Plan to stay longer and possibly paint your own masterpiece. You see, the brightest-colored pottery requires three coats of paint and that takes time.
All Fired Up also offers a wide selection of stamps, sponges and other cool painting techniques. And you can get as messy as you want — clean-up is included in your price too!
If you go: Weekends can get busy. Call ahead of time to check and plan on waiting outside the shop a bit. Also, the studio doesn’t provide painting smocks, so don’t dress your kids in the cutest clothes. Prepare your kids ahead of time with leaving empty-handed. It takes a week for the studio to fire your pieces. Parking is on New York Avenue, and the studio is closed Mondays. Click here for more on hours. Address: 229 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park.
